Another comment: I was interviewing candidates for county supervisor recently, most of whom were Democrats, ranging from very progressive to moderate. There were two Republicans (both of the type one wishes were still representative of that party). The woman I interviewed talked about regional transportation being a needed service and environmentally beneficial: we should have a bus service that would serve the entire county, she had a way to pay for it, and she maintained there had to be a way for all to afford it. She went on to say that everyone who was able to work should - everyone can do something, build, accounting, whatever, so everyone could benefit by - where did I hear this before...

Very interesting segment. My state any be the only one, or one of a couple, with a stripy non-partisan Legislative Service Bureau. Any legislation has to go through them, as they write it to conform with the state code and constitution. They have taken pride in being nonpartisan; however, a blood red wave (thank to lack of a fw votes per county) enabled a good deal of horrible legislation to be introduced and passed. Polls clearly show lack of support, but - you ca see where how your comments are born out. There is push-back, just hoping it really pushes hard..... There have been some similar practices here - agree, this has the potential to be fairer, more productive and more democratic.
